What is a DOI?

A Digital Object Identifier, or DOI, is a unique string of numbers, letters, and symbols used to permanently identify an article or document and link to it on the web. Because a DOI never changes, academic citation styles recommend using DOIs instead of URLs to locate sources whenever possible.
